My goal is to create a positive classroom climate where students are comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes. In class, I stress the fact that we are a family of learners who support and protect each other inside and outside of school. Students are encouraged to be self-reliant and develop inner discipline skills. When issues occur, we often discuss what happened or how we are feeling as a group. In turn we decide what course of action needs to be taken to solve problems. In a sense, I am a facilitator and the students ultimately seek out their own solutions. This approach to inner discipline builds critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Students develop the belief that “they are capable of solving most of the problems that they encounter” (Charles, 2008). This is a skill that will help students navigate through school, their neighborhood and hopefully follow them into adulthood. Welcome to "the think tank!"
